Native American Basket, Ca. 1800
This bowl-shaped basket, from the J.W. Powell Collection, probably was
acquired by John Wesley Powell when he was collecting for the Smithsonian
Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology in the 1880s.
Constructed with coiled cottonwood or willow and decorated with anthropomorphic
figures, geometric designs and triple step designs using devil's claw
stitching, this 12 inch high basket probably was made by Apache Indians
in the American Southwest, a region Powell visited. Object ID: USGS-575123 |
