Grove Carl Gilbert

This portrait of Grove Carl Gilbert(1843-1918) was done in the 1920's by Abner Lowe. Gilbert joined the Geological Survey on its founding in 1879 and served as its first Chief Geologist (1889-1892). Gilbert made significant contributions to the fields of tectonics, hydrology, glaciology, earthquake studies, and geological methods. He is considered one of the most distinguished American Geologists.
