Climate and Land Use Change Mission Area

Understanding a changing world and how it impacts our natural resources, our livelihoods, and our communities.

The CLU Mission Area includes these activities:

Carbon Sequestration scientists assess current and potential carbon sequestration in ecosystems and geologic formations.
Scientist in the mountains performing field measurements
Climate R&D conducts fundamental research on the processes and impacts of climate and land-use change.
Satellite over examples of image products
EROS is the Nationís archive of global land imagery and the provider of information and knowledge for understanding how a changing Earth affects people and nature.
Scientist in grasslands performing field studies
LCS researches the spatial patterns, processes and consequences of changes in land use, land condition and land cover.
Four Decades of Earth Imaging
Oversees the management of the Landsat Missions and Land Imagery Archive located at EROS Center. LRS supports the development of the new remote sensing science data products and helps ensure land remote sensing data continuity.

NCCWSC provides managers with information addressing the impacts of climate change on wildlife and habitats.
UAS in flight
The National UAS Project Office supports the safe, efficient, and cost-effective adoption of UAS technology into the research and operational activities of the DOI.
