By looking at core samples, which are vertical cylindrical samples taken out of the ground, scientists are able to see what past conditions were like. In south Florida, shallow sediment cores were collected within the bays, and the faunal and floral remains, sediment geochemistry, and shell biochemistry in the cores were analyzed. In addition, modern field data were collected from the same region as the cores, and served as proxies to allow accurate interpretation of past environments where these sediments were deposited.
