Why aren't we drilling in the Bakken Formation?

Oil has been produced from the Bakken Formation since the 1950’s and drilling has increased dramatically in the last few years.  A slideshow about the 2013 USGS assessment includes historical drilling and production as well as information about recent dramatic increases in drilling and production. You can access the slideshow at 2013 USGS Survey Petroleum Resource Assessment of the Bakken and Three Forks Formation.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (not part of the USGS) has a time-lapse map that does a great job of showing the rapid growth of drilling and production of oil in the Bakken Formation area up until 2010.  That map is located at U.S.Energy Information Administration website.

The USGS does not maintain statistics on oil production, however, this information can be obtained from publicly available sources like the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas Division, and/or the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Board of Oil and Gas Conservation.
