How do I find and download US Topo and HTMC maps?
US Topo maps and the maps of the Historical Topographic Map Collection (HTMC) can be downloaded free of charge, in PDF format, from three applications:
3) A text query application at the USGS US Topo and Historical Topographic Map Collection website.
For tutorial information on download and product use, see the US Topo and Historical Topographic Map Users Guide.
A fourth USGS interface, called TopoView, serves only HTMC maps, but has better graphics for browsing and for finding maps in specific time periods. As of April 2015, TopoView also serves GeoTIFF versions of the HTMC maps. (We do not publish GeoTIFF versions of US Topo maps, but see this FAQ for more information on GeoTIFF reformat.)
Non-USGS sites may also serve US Topo and HTMC maps. Though we encourage third-party use of our products, be aware that these applications are not always up to date. Google Maps Gallery includes an application named "USGS Topographic Maps" that serves only US Topo maps from the first 3-year production cycle, 2010-2012.
