West Nile Virus FAQs - 15 Found

I'm not seeing the numbers of birds that I have seen in previous years. Is this because of West Nile Virus? Are some bird species going to disappear completely?

There is a nation-wide decline in many bird species. This has been documented in annual Christmas Bird Counts, Breeding Bird Surveys, and reports from bird enthusiasts. It’s possible that West Nile Virus has been a contributing factor for some species that are especially vulnerable to lethal infection (jays, crows, and ravens). For most bird species, however, habitat loss probably has a much greater impact on population declines. Commonly seen bird species are unlikely to disappear from the United States.
