Which resampling methods are best for preserving NED data accuracy and terrain characteristics?

Cubic convolution and bilinear interpolation are the preferred methods of resampling digital elevation data, and will result in a smoother appearance. Nearest neighbor has a tendency to leave artifacts such as stair-stepping and periodic striping in the data which may not be apparent when viewing the elevation data but might affect derivative products, such as shaded relief or slope rasters.
