Introduction to Groundwater-Flow Management Modeling

Course code: USGS-OED-GW1419
Course title: Introduction to Groundwater-Flow Management Modeling
Description: This course is an introduction to ground-water flow management (optimization) modeling using the Ground-Water Management (GWM) Package of MODFLOW-2000 and MODFLOW-2005. GWM can be applied to many types of ground-water management problems, such as limiting ground-water level declines or streamflow depletions, managing ground-water withdrawals, and conjunctively using ground water and surface water. Students gain familiarity with 1) how groundwater-mgmt problems are formulated within an optimization-modeling framework; 2) response matrix technique for solving groundwater-flow mgmt problems; 3) use of the GWM-2005 code to solve groundwater-mgmt problems; and 4) how groundwater-mgmt modeling can be incorporated into project proposals. See draft agenda at end of announcement for more details of class. PREREQUISITES: Attendees of this course are expected to be familiar with MODFLOW for simulating ground-water flow. Familiarity with Microsoft windows computer operating system will be helpful but is not required.
<Target Audience:
The course is open to all USGS employees who meet the prerequisites described. OFAs and Cooperators may attend on a space available basis. WRD cooperators MUST apply through their cooperating Water Science Center Office following procedures identical to those used by WRD staff.
