Geochemistry Modeling Workshop

Course code: USGS-OED-GW3305
Course title: Geochemistry Modeling Workshop
Description: This workshop is provided as an opportunity for participants to obtain one-on-one instruction in the application of geochemical models to their specific groundwater investigations. No formal lectures are planned, but class discussions will be initiated as issues of general interest arise. Participants are required to have chemical and hydrological data for their project, including complete major ion chemical analyses and mineralogical and hydrologic knowledge of their aquifer. Isotopic data will also be useful if available. Modeling approaches will be tailored to the specific needs of each project and may include any combination of trend identification, speciation modeling, inverse modeling, C-14 age dating, reaction modeling, and 1- or 3-D reaction-transport modeling. Available modeling tools include PHREEQC, NetpathXL, and PHAST. Potential outcomes for individual projects include identification of data needs, identification of geochemical processes, constraints on directions and rates of groundwater flow, quantification of extents and rates of geochemical processes, and prediction of the evolution of groundwater chemistry.
Target Audience:
This is an advanced workshop on geochemical modeling. It is a workshop for application of geochemical models to the student's filed data which may include major element chemistry, trace metals, inorganic contaminants, nutrients, radionuclides, or isotopic data. Participants should be familiar with basic chemical principles and mineralogy and have taken Aquatic Chemistry (QW2032) and Geochemistry for Groundwater Systems (GW3021), and/or have equivalent experience.
Delivery method: ILT
Instructional hours: 24
Credits/CEUs: 0
Vendor: USGS-OED
