Water-Quality Principles (Blended)

Course code: USGS-OED-QW1022-Blended
Course title: Water-Quality Principles (Blended)
Description: strong>

Adobe Flash Player, v. 8 or higher, is needed to view this course.

Description:

This online, instructor-facilitated course provides foundational training for personnel who are or will be engaged in the study and collection of water-quality data and the managers of, or other participants in, such investigations. It provides an undergraduate-level introduction to the scientific principles, concepts, and practices that underlie the development and execution of water-quality studies and covers inorganic, organic, and isotope chemistry; ecology; microbiology; concepts of quality assurance and quality control in project work; considerations in evaluating the sources, fate, and transport of contaminants in the aqueous environment; and introduces simple graphing methods commonly used for analysis of water-quality data.

Students should allow from 80 hours to complete this course, as it involves assigned readings, end-of-lesson exercises, and a student-developed case-study project.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to: (1) define key water-quality terms; (2) describe the effects on water quality of hydrologic, biologic, geologic, and atmospheric systems; (3) be conversant in the basic principles, properties, and structures of inorganic, isotope, and organic chemistry; (4) explain major-ion environmental cycles, field-measured water properties; (5) list some environmental and pathogenic microorganisms; (6) describe the structure of aquatic ecosystems and the role of indicator species for habitat assessments; and (7) demonstrate use of common practices and methods for analysis of water-quality data.

Attendees:

Personnel who are or will be engaged in the study and collection of water-quality data and the managers of, or other participants in, such investigations.
