Aquatic Chemistry

Course code: USGS-OED-QW2032
Course title: Aquatic Chemistry
Description:
Prerequisite:
Students should have taken a college chemistry class or have permission from the course developer, Briant Kimball, to participate in the class.
Description:
This course will introduce chemical principles needed to understand the importance of chemical reactions in aquatic chemistry. The focus will be on chemical reactions that occur in natural waters and that affect water quality in the hydrologic cycle. Topics include: (1) Aquatic chemistry in hydrologic cycle; (2) Thermodynamic principles; (3) Acid-base chemistry; (4) Alkalinity, pH, and the carbonate system; (5) Mineral-solution chemistry, precipitation and dissolution; (6) Organic chemical reactions; (7) Metal-ligand chemistry; (8) Oxidation-reduction chemistry; and (9) Aquatic surface chemistry. Course work will be structured into lectures to introduce topics and then problem solving with some computer work. A pre-course assignment will review chemical and mathematical background needed for the course. Chemical- equilibrium computer models will used, but only introduced in this course.
Objectives:
This course will introduce chemical principles needed to understand the importance of chemical reactions in aquatic chemistry.
Target Audience:
All US Geological Survey employees who need to understand the basic chemical reactions that affect natural water quality. The course meets the needs of those working in the area of water quality who have a limited background in chemistry or who have not worked with chemistry for a long time. Employees with a substantial background in chemistry or geochemistry may want to consider the course GW3021, Geochemistry for Ground-Water Systems, which includes detailed instruction on the use of geochemical models. Cooperators may attend on a space available basis.
Delivery method: ILT
Instructional hours: 40
Credits/CEUs: 0
Vendor: USGS-OED
