Course title: National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Ecological Field Methods
Description: This 3-day, instructor-led course will teach the participants the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program's ecological field methods for the consistent collection of biological and physical samples in rivers.The course provides basic instruction and demonstration of (1) methods for collecting and field-processing algal, invertebrate, and fish samples, (2) methods for conducting habitat assessments, and (3) procedures for using the BioData System to enter and manage samples and sampling information.
The first day of the course is spent in a classroom reviewing basic information about the field protocols, sample-shipping guidelines, and preparing for field exercises, including the use of electronic field forms for data collection. There will also be a short overview of data entry and review in the BioData System. The second and third days are devoted to hands-on application of sampling and processing methods, completing field data sheets, and labeling and preserving samples.

Prerequisite Info:
Students are expected to be familiar with current NAWQA protocols (WRIR 98-4052, WRIR 98-4239, and OFR 02-150) for sampling biological communities and performing habitat assessments available at:
Students are required to bring waders, personal flotation devices, polarized sunglasses, and other apparel that is appropriate for weather conditions.
