Course Description:

USGS Firearms Safety Program provides appropriate firearms safety training for any employee or volunteer, or others that work under USGS funding/direction, who uses, handles, carries, or stores a firearm as a part of their official duties. This course is an online refresher for Defense Against Wild Animals and covers the following topic specific materials: Introduction, Firearms Safety (General and Range), Safety in the Field, Firearm Types/Function/Ballistics, Modern Firearms Handling Techniques, RDS and Mental Conditioning, Animal Behavior and Habitats. Course content is meant as a precursor to the field-based Range and Field Exercises training.

Performance Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
--Be proficient in various aspects of firearm policy, safety and handling such that the student will pass an exit exam and move on to the field component of the training.
--Illustrate the mental concepts of reactive defensive shooting (RDS) and the defensive mindset such that they are able to perform these actions in the field.
--Identify key animal behaviors (wolf, bear, and cougar) that may indicate a dangerous situation.
--Have a working knowledge and understanding of firearm alternatives such as non-lethal animal deterrents and the appropriate use of each.
