We Are USGS!

Train-the-Trainer Program

A drop of water in a puddle of water and quote, "We realize that what we are accomplishing is a drop in the ocean. But if this drop were not in the ocean, it would be missed."

The leadership Train-the-Trainer program is a continuous learning opportunity within the U.S. Geological Survey's Leadership Program. This opportunity exemplifies and supports the USGS goal of developing a leadership-centered culture throughout the bureau and will enable us to spread the leadership philosophy to a larger population within the USGS.

Purpose

The leadership Train-the-Trainer program is a continuous learning opportunity within the U.S. Geological Survey's Leadership Program. This opportunity exemplifies and supports the USGS goal of developing a leadership-centered culture throughout the bureau and will enable us to spread the leadership philosophy to a larger population within the USGS.

General Program Information

The Train-the-Trainer program consists of two components:

  1. Provide training to selected leadership class graduates to become facilitators and coaches and
  2. These instructors will provide 2-day leadership courses for USGS employees throughout the United States.

In November 2010, fifteen individuals were selected from the pool of trainer applicants (See Trainer Information below). These individuals attended the Train-the-Trainer in Denver, Colorado, from November 1-5, 2010. Following the Train-the-Trainer session, the fifteen trainers and coaches have been working to lead 2-day leadership training courses for interested groups throughout the USGS.

Requests from individuals and groups who would like to host in their area a 2-day leadership intensive program, led by these trainers, should be made to Sandy Bruner (sbruner@usgs.gov ). The main topics of the 2-day leadership training courses include: Differences between leadership and management; self-assessment; purpose and vision; team exercises; principle-centered leadership; storytelling; mentoring and coaching; leadership and courage, self-reflection, closure and reflecting circles.

Program Description

The primary objectives and goals of the U. S. Geological Survey's Train-the-Trainer are:

  2. Provide trainers with the tools and content curriculum necessary for successful transfer of information;
  3. Enhance the skills and delivery techniques of the trainers;
  4. Facilitate uniformity in the delivery of the message required to create a leadership-centered culture;
  5. Identify and dispel barriers, myths and obstacles to leadership development within the USGS; and
  6. Create a "roadmap" for success.

Trainer Information

All qualified individuals are invited and encouraged to give back to the organization by participating in the Train-the-Trainer session. Individuals interested in becoming a trainer must have successfully completed one of the following:

  1. Leadership 201;
  2. Team Leadership Program;
  3. Executive Leadership Program;
  4. Senior Executive Service and/or
  5. Federal Executive Institute.

Other long-term leadership training programs will be considered. Additionally, each trainer must commit to facilitate at least two 2-day leadership training experiences annually, as well as attend a follow-up session, which will be held approximately 6 months after the August program. Coaching and mentoring for the trainers will be provided before, during and after the Train-the-Trainer session.
