Examples of TEL Developed Through the TEL Program

Below are some examples of TEL courses developed through the TEL Program. These examples are just snippets from entire courses/presentations. As you'll see, different types of instructional technology can be used to create effective, user-friendly, stand-alone TEL and blended learning courses. For more information on how OED can help you design, develop, and deliver an exceptional learning experience for USGS employees, contact Tj Lane at tjlane@usgs.gov or 303-445-4677.

Since 2004, the TEL Program Course Developers have learned many lessons according to student evaluations of the TEL courses. You can see many of these "lessons learned " in the course developer's toolbox.

  • Data Aging in NWIS 4.6:
  • USGS Reimbursable Agreements:
  • Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC):
    • This course is a blended learning course. It consists of an on-line, prerequisite TEL module, followed by an instructor-led, 24-hour, practicals course.
    • This is a fairly complex course as it has several videos, Flash® animations, and prerequisite TEL module will take approximately 6-8 hours to complete.
    • For this course, Tj (TEL Program Lead) attended a 5 day traditional MOCC course and took massive amounts of videos and pictures of students and instructors performing exercises and demonstrations. The videos were edited and many are linked throughout the two TEL modules.
  • Assertive Communication:
  • Bear Spray--Training for Defense Against Dangerous Animals:
  • Water-Quality Principles -- Lesson 3:
    • This is an undergraduate course in water-quality principles.
    • It is quite comprehensive. This course is considered blended learning because it consists of on-line lessons, but is also facilitated by instructors. Students will have pre-lesson reading assignments, assignments to be emailed to facilitators, 13 on-line lessons, and a final proposal project to be done by the student to the facilitator via webinar.
    • The duration of the course is 1 month (40-60 hours).
    • This course prepares anyone who works with water-quality with a sound foundation in water-quality principles.
  • Streamflow Measurements with ADCPs (SW1321) Prerequisite Course:
  • Preparing Data to Share:
