Student Recruitment and Hiring Guidance

Students are the pipeline of the USGS's future and managers must ensure aggressive actions are taken to employ, train, and retain students to meet our future employment needs. Student employment has benefited the bureau by serving as a key means for increasing awareness of the USGS and our mission nationwide, proven to be effective for acquiring increased skills and expanding our applicant pools throughout the bureau, and has resulted in improving the diversity of our workforce. The following student employment and non-employment programs are hiring options available to managers for filling position vacancies:

  1. Promote the Student Employment (Recruitment) Website for advertising student opportunities (http://www.usgs.gov/ohr/student/) -- Students search and apply for vacancies via electronic resumes. Your servicing personnel specialist is available to issue a vacancy announcement for student opportunities. (STEP or SCEP appointment)

  2. Utilize contacts at academic institutions that have minority representation in applicable science curricula.

  3. Non-employment options for utilizing students: These options include the Earth Science Intern Program, and Student Services Contracting Program.

  4. Additional information regarding student employment and non-employment program options can be found on the Survey's Human Resources recruitment.

Your servicing Human Resources Specialist is available to provide you with additional information on recruitment and hiring procedures on any of the above programs
