Bookmark and Share

The USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program implementation plan was delivered to Congress and released at on October 16, 2006. This new Program will inventory, archive, preserve, and catalog geologic, geophysical, and engineering data, maps, well logs, and samples.

The database will contain geological and geophysical information easily accessible through the Internet-based National Digital Catalog, allowing users to quickly identify what is available and where it is located. The Program will provide consistent standards, while facilities and collections will be managed by the USGS and maintained by agencies within the Department of the Interior (DOI) and State geological surveys.

Section 351 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (P.L. 109-58) directs the Secretary of the Interior, through the Director of the USGS, “to carry out a National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program” which is comprised of “State agencies that elect to be part of the system and agencies within DOI that maintain geological and geophysical data and samples.”
