HAWAI`I ISLAND, Hawaii — The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory marks its 100th anniversary of providing cutting-edge volcano, earthquake monitoring, and hazard assessment with a special ceremony to kick off its centennial open house on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Located on the rim of Kīlauea Volcano’s summit caldera within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, HVO monitors the activity of six Hawaiian volcanoes including Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, two of the most active volcanoes in the world.
