A very light earthquake, preliminary magnitude 2.5 according to the U.S. Geological Survey, occurred at 1:45 p.m. EDT today in Manassas, Va., 25 miles west of Washington, D.C.
The most recent felt earthquake in Virginia was on July 27, 1997. It was centered in Culpeper and was also a magnitude 2.5. The largest historic earthquake in Virginia occurred just over 100 years ago, on May 31, 1897. It was a tremor near Pearisburg, west of Roanoke near the West Virginia-Virginia border.
