Jerad BalesJerad Bales

Dr. Bales is the Acting Associate Director for Water, where he is the Senior Executive responsible for the planning and execution of about $200M in Federally-appropriated water programs, and provides oversight for an additional $250M in water science activities supported by USGS partners.

Career History and Highlights:

Jerad began his career with the Tennessee Valley Authority at the Engineering Laboratory in Norris, TN, where he developed physical and numerical models. Following completion of his Ph.D. work, which focused on estuarine transport process, he began his USGS career in Raleigh, NC. Jerad has conducted research on water-resources, hazards, and water-quality issues throughout the U.S., as well as internationally, published more than 120 articles and technical reports on this work, and continues to publish on water issues. He co-chairs the OSTP Subcommittee on Water Availability and Quality, is a member of two NSF Advisory Committees, and has taught graduate courses at Duke University and University of North Carolina.


Jerad received a B.S. and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a water resources emphasis from The University of Texas. He is a registered engineer in the State of North Carolina.
