Responsibilities

Dr. Labson is responsible for the oversight and scientific leadership of the Office of International Programs and serves as the principal advisor to the Director, the Deputy Director, other senior Bureau managers, and the Department of the Interior regarding the development and conduct of a broad spectrum of international activities involving scientific cooperation and assistance in geologic, hydrologic, biological, and geographic research and scientific investigations.

Career History and Highlights

Dr. Labson joined the USGS in 1977 serving as a research geophysicist and most recently as the Director of the Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center in Denver, Colo. His career with the USGS has been focused on the application of geophysical methods to quantitative imaging of the Earth. The applications include deep crustal mapping, mineral resource appraisals, geologic hazards, environmental contamination, national security issues, and water supply development and quality. As part of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response, he led the Mass Balance Team of the Flow Rate Technical Group. His most recent scientific focus has been on the understanding of the relationship of the chemical and physical properties of the Earth to resultant geophysical phenomena.

Education

Dr. Labson received a bachelor's in geology from the University of California, Berkeley, a bachelor's in physics from California State University, Hayward, and a doctorate in engineering geoscience from the University of California, Berkeley.
