RE: USGS Induction to GIS Hall of Fame
Dear Dr. McNutt:
The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) Board of Directors has approved the induction of the United States Geological Survey to the URISA GIS Hall of Fame. The nomination was officially submitted by Cy Smith, URISA Immediate Past President, and is attached for your reference. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor! The nomination statement made it clear that USGS has made, and continues to make, great contributions to the GIS community and profession.
URISA will hold its 50th annual conference, GIS-Pro 2012, in Portland, Oregon this Fall, September 30 - October 4, 2012. This will be an exceptional event, with a number of special presentations and important speakers, including Michael Goodchild and Jack Dangermond. We anticipate a great event celebrating this important milestone for URISA. We hope you and/or others from USGS will be able to join us in Portland to participate in the GIS Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and to speak briefly during the ceremony.
There is an opportunity for USGS to have a booth at the conference. I believe USGS has had a booth at many previous GIS-Pro conferences, so plans for that may already be underway within the agency. The cost for the booth includes one conference registration, which would partially offset the total.
URISA will be publicizing the USGS induction into the GIS Hall of Fame in our various publications and with a press release. We will seek to coordinate with you or someone in your office on those communications. Please let me know with whom we should communicate.
If you need additional information regarding the conference, or assistance in making arrangements to attend, please feel free to contact the URISA Executive Director, Wendy Nelson, at wnelson(at)urisa(dot)org. If I can provide further assistance or information, don't hesitate to contact me. Again, congratulations and thank you for the contributions of USGS to the GIS community and profession.
