Q: Can I be automatically notified of vacancies as soon as they open?
A: Yes. Login to OARS (instructions) and select "Edit Personal Information/Update Resume." At the bottom of the screen are "Notification Preferences." You can narrow down the jobs you notified of by grade, series, and geographic location.
Q:How do I unsubscribe from the email notifications?
A: If you no longer wish to receive email notification of job vacancies through OARS:
- Log into OARS
- Select "Edit Personal Information/Update Resume"
- Click the "Next" button
- At the bottom of the screen that appears is a selection that will let you turn off OARS notifications.
You may also unsubscribe by following the "unsubscribe" link present at the bottom of each email notification that you receive.
Q:I unsubscribed from email notifications and I'm still receiving them. What happened?
A: When you unsubscribe from email notifications in OARS the change will not take effect until the day after the action is processed. As a result, you may receive notification email(s) a few hours after you change your preferences. If you continue to receive notifications more than 24 hours after you unsubscribe, please let us know.
Q: I elected to receive email notifications and I'm not receiving them.
A: Please login to OARS (see instructions), select "Edit Personal Information," and click "Next." You should then verify that the email address that you entered into OARS is correct. It is very important that OARS has your current, correct email address not only to receive job notifications, but also to receive other official correspondence relating to your job applications. Please remember that email notifications are provided as a courtesy to our applicants to help them find jobs within the USGS.
Q: What cities and states do you hire in?
A: The USGS has employees in all 50 states including Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Western Pacific. However, over half of all USGS employees are located in 3 places: Reston, Virginia; Denver, Colorado; and Menlo Park, California, so naturally that is where most vacancies are located. For a more detailed listing of the USGS location nearest you, see the USGS Contact Page.
