QUALIFICATION STANDARD FOR THE STUDENT CAREER EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

The following standard is to be used when making initial appointments or subsequent promotions:

GS-1

Enrollment in a high school diploma program

 

The Qualification Standard for the Target Occupational Series

GS-2

High school diploma or equivalent

Continued study in a high school education program and completion of 1 period of student trainee work experience

Same as above

GS-3

Completion of 1 academic year post-high school study

Completion of 1 full semester, or the equivalent, of post-high school study and 1 period of student trainee work experience

Same as above

GS-4

Completion of 2 academic years post-high school study or Associate's degree

(a) Completion of 1 academic year of study and 2 periods of student trainee work experience; or (b) completion of 1 1/2 academic years of study and 1 period of student trainee work experience

Same as above

GS-5

Completion of 4 academic years post-high school study leading to a Bachelor's degree or completion of 4 academic years of pre-professional study

(a) Completion of 3 academic years of study leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree and 1 period of GS-4 student trainee work experience; or (b) completion of 2 1/2 academic years of study leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree and 3 periods of GS-4 level student trainee work experience

GS-6*

Completion of 1/2 academic year of graduate level education.

(a) Completion of 4 academic years of study leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree and 1 period of GS-5 student trainee work experience; or (b) completion of 3 academic years of study leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree and 2 periods (640 hours) of GS-5 student trainee work experience

GS-7

Completion of 1 academic year of graduate level education, Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement for two-grade interval positions as defined in the Introduction to the Qualification Standards Handbook, or 5 academic years of pre-professional study

**(a) Completion of 4 academic years of study (or all the requirements) for a Bachelor's degree and completion of 1 period of GS-5 student trainee work experience; or (b) completion of 4 academic years of pre-professional study and completion of 1 period of GS-5 student trainee work experience

GS-8*

Completion of 1 1/2 academic years of graduate level education or 5 1/2 year of pre-professional study

(a) Completion of 1/2 academic year of graduate level study and completion of 1 period of GS-7 student trainee work experience, or (b) completion of 4 1/2 academic years of pre-professional study and completion of 1 period of GS-7 student trainee work experience

GS-9

Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education or Master's or equivalent graduate degree

(a) Completion of 1 full year of graduate level study and completion of 1 period of GS-7 student trainee work experience; or (b) completion of 5 academic years of pre-professional study and completion of 1 period of GS-7 student trainee work experience

GS-10*

 

(a) Completion of 1 1/2 years of graduate level study and completion of 1 period of GS-9 student trainee work experience.

GS-11

For research positions, completion of all requirements for a Master's or equivalent degree

Completion of 2 full years of graduate level study and completion of 1 period of GS-9 student trainee work experience

GS-11

For non-research positions, completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. or equivalent degree

Completion of 2 1/2 full years of graduate level study and completion of 1 period of GS-9 student trainee work experience

*Covers student trainee positions where the target occupation follows a one-grade interval pattern (i.e., hydrologic technician, computer assistant, etc.).

**Covers student trainee positions where the target occupation follows a two-grade interval pattern.

The required education must be related to the field/target position for qualification purposes. Agencies may use selective factors to identify special requirements (e.g., specific courses, need to perform the work of individual position).
