Orienteering

For the orienteering activity, visitors are given a topographic map of the land around the USGS National Center building. They are taught what the different map symbols represent. Because the USGS National Center Building is shaped like a compass rose (eight-point star), visitors can sharpen their map reading and direction skills by using the building as a compass. Students are asked to locate manmade and natural features around the grounds of the USGS National Center. orienteering group
