AL - 2022 Alabama Multi-Region Lidar Project

The lidar collection for the 2020 Alabama Multi-Region lidar Project will result in updated and enhanced elevation coverage for four counties within the State of Alabama. The majority of the counties selected in this effort would not be able to acquire lidar due to the cost. This project is permitting the state an opportunity to share in the cost for areas that would not acquire it otherwise.

AZ - Central Coconino County and Arizona Strip

NRCS-Arizona, partnering with State and Federal agencies, will collect 3,479 mi2 of leaf-on QL1 lidar data over Coconino and Mohave Counties in Arizona. In addition to QL1 NRCS-Arizona would like to capture a biomass deliverable to include a canopy layer (polygon) and crown points layer (point). These two areas represent high workload areas for NRCS.

CA - Filling the Gaps in Contra Costa Counties Lidar

The East Bay Regional Park District is seeking to fill a gap in lidar in central and eastern Contra Costa County, totaling 163 mi2. The Park District seeks to use this lidar to support the development of a wildfire risk assessment map and its component lidar derived input layers such as pervious/impervious, topographic layers, canopy density, canopy height, canopy bulk density, canopy base height, and ladder fuels. This mapping is funded by a Fire Prevention Grant awarded by Cal Fire in September of 2021 and is supported by regional stakeholders including Contra Costa Water District and California State Parks.  This lidar will also be used to develop a fine scale vegetation map for Contra Costa and Alameda Counties.

CA - Filling the Gaps in Lidar Data for Northern California

The North Coast's valuable resources are at risk due to serious gaps in knowledge about the region's landscapes and communities. Existing vegetation maps are piecemeal, out of date, or at a statewide scale which cannot support local decision making. Topographic data are coarse or non-existent. Lidar data provides detailed information about the topography of an area, its infrastructure and the structure of forests and wildland fuels, thereby supporting a myriad of applications. The high-resolution lidar provided by this project are also foundational to prioritizing the unprecedented amounts of state and federal funding to ensure that communities, built infrastructure, natural and working lands are more resilient to climate change, floods, fires, and droughts.

CA - San Francisco 3D xyz - Aerial Lidar 

San Francisco is a compact urban setting of topographic and cultural diversity, where dense aerial lidar as a public dataset is appropriate for resilience to flooding from storm inundation and sea level rise. Aerial lidar can frame a 3D mapping for data-informed decisions by City departments as well as possibly competing analysis by interested public. Lidar helps bring urban tree canopy closer to tree census, inform neighborhood forest equity discussions, more detailed planning for tree maintenance, and more forestry jobs in urban setting. The San Francisco 3D xyz project will fill a small but significant gap in San Francisco Bay regional 3DEP coverage with public data meeting internal needs from City and County of San Francisco agencies, commissions, departments and related entities.

CA - South Sierra California QL1 Lidar to Characterize Fuel Loads and Topography

Due to both anthropogenic and atmospheric/climate stressors, much of the State of California is under threat of continued catastrophic fire. With the recent Caldor and Tamarack Fires occurring in August and September of 2021, the Sierran Zone is a priority for collection of valuable lidar data - where numerous communities live at the interface of vulnerable areas, where significant forest resources are managed, and where protected national treasures (Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks) exist. Data from the South Sierra California QL1 Lidar to Characterize Fuel Loads and Topography project (15,539 sq miles) will significantly empower firefighters, first responders, legislators, city planners, and scientists for years to come, spawning valuable research and mitigation plans to ultimately increase the State’s resiliency towards this new extreme fire risk.

KY - KyFromAbove 2022 Lidar Acquisition

The 2022 KyFromAbove acquisition effort will reacquire lidar data for counties that were previously collected during the 2010-2014 timeframe. Reacquisition of data for this area will ensure that it meets current QL2 specifications. The data will be leveraged by the Kentucky Division of Water, NRCS, and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to improve analysis, design, and research conducted within the AOI's. All collected data will be shared across state government and in the public domain where it brings value to a wide array of business processes.

ME - Maine Southcentral #2 Update

The Maine GeoLibrary and Maine Office of GIS have assembled a diverse team of partners working towards the same goal of acquiring updated and tidally coordinated lidar data at USGS QL2 specifications. The Maine Southcentral #2 Update lidar project will acquire a total of 2,505 mi2 and provide a complete set of USGS QL2 accuracy data with tidal coordination for rivers where applicable.

MN - Central Mississippi Lidar Acquisition Block

This project requests QL1 lidar for the Central Mississippi Lidar Acquisition Block. This region represents the Minneapolis-St Paul, seven county metropolitan area and its expansion into surrounding counties. The landscape is predominantly complex upland and lowland forest ecosystems interspersed with glacial lakes, wetlands, and three major river systems making this region rich with outdoor recreation opportunities. This blended area of urban and rural environments has experienced significant natural and anthropogenic changes that are not reflected in existing low-density lidar data, including impacts from floods and erosion because of our changing climate, and rural infrastructure change and urban development. This project has many partners who understand the return on investment of high-density lidar, particularly related to natural resource management. Numerous stakeholders in this project are eager to make immediate use of updated high-density lidar in their risk mitigation and asset management strategies.

MN - Upper Mississippi Lidar Acquisition Block (LAB)

The Upper Mississippi River Lidar Acquisition Block (LAB) is the largest block in the Minnesota Lidar Plan. The Plan began implementation in FY20, when the Rainy Lake LAB was submitted for 3DEP consideration. Since then, several LABs have been successful with 3DEP awards going towards QL1 lidar for over 26,000 mi2 thus far. This year, the MN 3D Geomatics Committee will submit funding requests for over 24,000 mi2. The successful completion of these planned acquisition areas, fulfills the goals of the MN Lidar Plan and, most importantly, 3DEP. This project has 14 partners who understand the return on investment of high-density lidar, particularly related to natural resource management. Numerous stakeholders are eager to make immediate use of updated high-density lidar in their risk mitigation strategies for the rapidly changing forest cover and water resources of Minnesota.

MN - Lidar Acquisition and Processing of Douglas County, MN

Through this project, Douglas County, MN, will receive data to support hydrology and environmental needs for the 350 lakes in the county. The data will aid in future planning and mapping needs. It will better serve local government agencies with higher density and greater accuracy datasets that will be used over the next five to ten years.

MT - Montana Statewide Lidar Acquisition Plan - Phase 4

Lidar acquisitions in Montana are coordinated through the Montana Elevation Working Group and guided by the Montana Lidar Plan. For this project, the NRCS, BLM, USFS, and USFWS are partnering with 3DEP to build upon recently collected and in-work lidar acquisitions (2020-2021), with an objective of attaining expansive county-wide and regional consistency across the western, southwest, and south-central regions of the state. Eight counties and the Northern Cheyenne reservation will be collected. Lidar-derived products are needed for soils mapping (highly erodible lands), cropland planning, geologic mapping, forest inventory and monitoring, vegetation characterization, flood-risk mapping, and conservation planning.

NV - 2022 Clark County Nevada Lidar Project

High-resolution lidar data was collected for the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in 2016. Since then, the area has experienced significant growth, including new development in both the residential and commercial sectors, which subsequently has changed the land coverage for much of the region, dating the 2016 data. It is important to acquire updated lidar for the region to better reflect the current landscape, advance ongoing conservation efforts, and assist with ongoing infrastructure planning, such as flood channels and detention basins.

NY - New York Southeast 5 Counties

Lidar at USGS Quality Level 2 will be collected for all of Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, and Ulster Counties in New York State, covering around 3209 mi2, replacing two lidar datasets. This project continues New York State's efforts to update statewide elevation data via lidar collection in coordination with federal efforts.  All new collections will meet Quality Level 2 specifications. The project areas were selected following discussions with FEMA, USDA-NRCS and USGS about in-progress and planned Federal lidar collections. Project extents will include overlap with existing projects to ensure no gaps and to allow for comparisons.

OR - DOGAMI OLC Malheur 3DEP Lidar Project 

This project will result in the acquisition of new lidar and the upgrade of a recent collection to meet 3DEP specification in Eastern Oregon. The proposed collection area currently has no lidar coverage and includes the Powder River, Malheur River, Bully Creek, and Willow Creek watersheds. The project area is in the combined Federal priority areas for Oregon, and a priority area in the 2014 Oregon Lidar prioritization plan. The elevation data collected by this project can be used at all levels of government to characterize and manage natural resources and hazards and assist with land use planning objectives, including the current USGS and BLM Abandoned Mines project.

OR - Expand 3DEP Coverage in Oregon 

This project will result in the acquisition and upgrade to 3DEP Specification of 2,462 square miles of lidar data for multiple areas in Western Oregon.  The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) manages 1,164 sq miles of State Forests and collects lidar for forest inventory, fire protection, and hazard assessment. The 2020 fire season was more extreme for Western Oregon than any other season since the Tillamook Burns (1930s-1950s). Consequently, there is little information on the impacts of severe fire at this scale. This data will be invaluable for geologic hazard assessments, forest restoration planning, hydrographic analyses, and salmonid habitat monitoring on state and federal public lands including those managed by USACE, BLM, and USFS.

OR - FY22 Umatilla And Wallowa-Whitman QL1 Lidar Project

Located in southeastern Washington, northeastern Oregon, and with a small area in central-west Idaho, the project area is east of the Cascade Range in the Blue Mountains. These areas on the Umatilla and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests are characterized by complex soils and geology, diverse plant communities, numerous wild and scenic rivers, fisheries, and wildlife resources. Beginning in FY22, most of the planned project area will be initiating cyclical multi-year forest management planning. The information gained from light detection and ranging (lidar) is changing the way the USFS and other land management agencies understand dynamic processes and monitor and manage the landscape. Lidar is improving decision-making and the way business is conducted by efficiently promoting the understanding of hydrology, climate, tree canopy structure, fuels loading, forest restoration, roads and infrastructure, and geomorphology.

UT - Lidar For the Ashley National Forest, Roosevelt & Vernal Districts, Utah

The USDA Forest Service (USFS) proposes the collection and processing of QL1 lidar data for portions of the Roosevelt and Vernal Ranger Districts in Duchesne and Uintah Counties in northeastern Utah. The purpose of the project is to obtain high-quality elevation data to support the conservation and management of watersheds and resources. The project will support land management activities related to forest ecosystem restoration, wildfire management planning and response, transportation and infrastructure, and geologic hazards mitigation. The proposed project builds on the adjacent 2020 USFS and 2018 FEMA/State acquisitions in Daggett and Uintah Counties to the north, east, and south.

VA - Northern Virginia Lidar Data Updates 

This project will collect approximately 1,742 square miles of lidar in the Northern Virginia counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Stafford Counties and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. The existing lidar for most of this area was collected around 2012 and needs to be updated. Data will be used for updates and enhancements to existing work by local governments with stormwater management, urban planning, historic and natural resource preservation, emergency service and hazard assessment support, and provide current, consistent data for regional planning efforts.

WA - Washington Northeast QL1 Lidar Project

This project continues Washington's objective to collect comprehensive, consistent high-quality lidar coverage across the state. The project will provide a vital lidar data resource for over 4,000 mi2 to support the critical needs within the Northeast region. The business uses for this project are wide-ranging, including water conservation and quality, irrigation engineering, geologic hazards, flood planning and drainage studies, transportation, wildlife management, and emergency management. This data will also provide critical data for wildfire hazard mitigation and forest health management.

WI - 2022 Wisconsin Statewide Lidar Data Collection - 10 County

The Wisconsin Land Information Program (WLIP) in partnership with 3DEP will continue its goal to complete QL2/QL1 lidar statewide. In 2022, lidar data for ten Wisconsin counties will be collected by USGS through a GPSC acquisition. The project area directly overlaps with NRCS, US Forest Service and USGS priority areas for data collection and supports local data needs by the DOT, DNR, tribes, county government, private business and more. The 2022 round of data collections will update many areas of the state with the oldest elevation data and cover several areas with recent significant flooding.

WI - 2022 Wisconsin Statewide Lidar Data Collection Completion - 2 County

The Wisconsin Department of Administration in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is collecting lidar over two remaining areas in the state that lack high-quality 3DEP lidar elevation data. This project completes the goal of acquiring QL2/QL1 lidar statewide by 2024. Wisconsin state and local government lidar partners deeply appreciate the hard work of USGS to administer the 3DEP program, the funding contributions of other Federal agencies, and the expertise of lidar contractors who collected and processed the data.
