1.  General Functions.  The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of the Associate Director for Environmental Health provides executive leadership for environmental health science activities that focus on the interface between health and the environment, where interactions among people, the environment, and other living organisms affect the risk of toxicological and infectious disease.  Environmental health science is used by natural resource, agricultural, public health, national security, and emergency-response managers, as well as the general public.

2.  Associate Director for Environmental Health.  The Associate Director exercises the authority delegated by the USGS Director to provide leadership and nationwide guidance for environmental health research activities of the Bureau and ensures integration of these activities with the strategic goals of the USGS and the Department of the Interior.  This includes scientific and technical leadership in the areas of contaminant, toxic, infectious disease, and health impacts of disasters particularly at the interface between health and the environment, where interactions among people, the environment, and other living organisms affect the risk of toxicological and infectious disease.  The Associate Director provides executive direction and oversight to ensure effective and efficient program planning, management and execution of the Bureau’s environmental health programs, including the development of methods and tools, research, and quality assurance.  Responsibilities are shared with a Deputy Associate Director.

The Associate Director and Deputy Associate Director are assisted in the development and implementation of the programs by Program Coordinators.  Program Coordinators are responsible for environmental health program planning, budget development, and program evaluation.  The Program Coordinators develop strategic program plans; coordinate programmatic activities within and outside the USGS to ensure broad participation in interdisciplinary studies; and conduct program reviews of current scientific projects to ensure that science is relevant to national objectives, meets the priorities of land managers, and is coordinated with other agencies.  The programs of the Environmental Health Mission Area are:   

A.  Contaminant Biology Program.  The Contaminant Biology Program supports investigations of the effects and exposure of environmental contaminants both toxicological and infectious.

B.  Toxic Substances Hydrology Program.  The Toxic Substances Hydrology Program supports investigations on the sources, occurrence, and movement of environmental contaminants in water.
