About the Flood Database for Oklahoma - Disclaimer

This mapping application was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) Survey and Bridge Divisions. Though we have carefully reviewed the database for quality, some transcription errors may be present. The user is advised to check the presented information against the original data source by using the Data Source Location links provided in the ODOT Events and USGS Events tables. The database was last updated in June 2022 and includes USGS data through September 2021 and ODOT data through June 2022.

The application performs best in Chrome and Safari browsers. Older versions of Internet Explorer (older than IE 10) have difficulty processing the volume of data contained in the database and may perform poorly and unpredictably on initial page load and during query tasks. Although USGS intends to make this web server available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, timely delivery of data and products from this server through the Internet is not guaranteed. The USGS provides these maps and data as-is for a quick reference, planning tool but assumes no legal liability or responsibility resulting from the use of this information. Maintenance Division

Search or filter using the ODOT maintenance division (1-8) in which the site is located. Sites outside of Oklahoma (USGS sites only) are assigned a maintenance division code of 0.

National Bridge Inventory (NBI) Number

Five-digit identification number, for ODOT sites located at an NBI bridge.

County

Search or filter using the county where the site is located. If the site is not in Oklahoma, the state abbreviation is listed in parentheses after the county name. Only USGS sites are located outside of Oklahoma.

HUC

Search or filter using the eight-digit hydrologic unit code (or Watershed Boundary Dataset subbasin) in which the site is located.

Elevation

Search or filter using the elevation (in feet) of the site, from the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS), referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. This is the approximate elevation of the site and not the water-surface stage during the flood. Use caution with this value, as this number has no standard source and may change over time as USGS streamflow gages are periodically overhauled.

Drainage Area

Search or filter using the drainage area (in square miles) of the watershed that drains to the site; the drainage area is unknown for a few sites. To search sites where the drainage area is not known, enter "-2" in the drainage area search field.

Discharge

Search or filter on the maximum discharge (in cubic feet per second) of the flood. The discharge is not known for ODOT events. To search events where the discharge is not known, enter "-2" in the discharge search field.

Year

Search or filter flood events on the calendar year of occurrence.

Data Source

Search or filter flood events on the data source of each flood event. Data in the flood database comes from two sources: Oklahoma Department of Transportation flood surveys and USGS National Water Information System annual and partial peak streamflow database and indirect discharge measurements.

Station Number

Search or filter using the USGS streamgage station number of the site; not all sites in the database are located at a USGS streamgage. To search sites that are not located at a USGS streamgage, enter "NA" in the Station No. search field.

Site Name

Search or filter on the name of the site, which usually includes the stream name and the nearest town. The search will return any site where any part of the site name matches the entire search criteria.

Site Name

USGS streamgage name of site. The site name usually includes the stream name and the nearest town.

Mile Marker

Search or filter flood events on the highway and mile-post number (mile marker) and the search radius from that point.

Station No.

USGS streamgage station number of site; if site is not located at USGS streamgage then it is listed as "NA."

Latitude

Latitude of site (in decimal degrees) referenced to the North American Datum of 1983.

Longitude

Longitude of site (in decimal degrees) referenced to the North American Datum of 1983.

County

County where site is located. If the site is not in Oklahoma, the state abbreviation is listed in parentheses after the county name.

HUC

Eight-digit hydrologic unit code (or Watershed Boundary Dataset subbasin) in which the site is located.

Drainage Area

The contributing drainage area (in square miles) of the watershed that drains to the site. These values are from StreamStats or the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS). If the drainage area is not known then the drainage area is listed as "-2."

Elevation

The elevation (in feet) of the site, from the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS), referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. This is the approximate elevation of the site and not the water-surface stage during the flood. Use caution with this value, as this number has no standard source and may change over time as USGS streamflow gages are periodically overhauled.

USGS Streamgage URL

The webpage of the USGS streamgage if the site is located at a USGS streamgage, otherwise listed as "NA."

Date

The date when the flood event occurred at the site in year-month-day format (YYYY/MM/DD). When the day was not known, the first of the month was arbitrarily chosen.

Discharge

The maximum discharge (in cubic feet per second) of the flood; if discharge was not known, then the discharge was listed as "-2."

Data Source Location

The link to the data source publication, webpage, or file. USGS partial peak (secondary flood peaks less than the primary annual flood peak) data are not yet accessible to the public through the USGS webpage.

Headline

The primary flood-related headline from the news publication.

Scope

The counties for which flood-related information in described in the news publication. If more than 4, "Many" is entered.

Publication

The news outlet which published the flood-related information.

Date

The publication date, in year-month-day format (YYYY/MM/DD), of the flood-related information.

Visuals

The number of flood-related visuals (figures, photos, and maps) in the publication.

Highway or Road

The highway, road, or intersection where the flood event occurred, according to the ODOT flood survey. Some of the highways or roads listed may no longer exist.

NHD Stream

The stream name (National Hydrography Dataset and Geographic Names Information System) which flooded, according to the ODOT flood survey.

Flood Elevation

The surveyed elevation in feet (from a standard datum) of the flood water, according to the ODOT flood survey.

Flood Height

The relative surveyed height in feet (from a local datum) of the flood water, according to the ODOT flood survey.

Flood Datum or Reference

The standard datum or local datum (or both) from which flood elevation and/or flood height were measured. This field also includes some information on survey locations and bridge plans.

Discharge Notes

Provides any additional information about the discharge. Codes are listed below. If no code applied, the field was listed as "NA".

Peak of Water Year

A flag to note if the event was the largest streamflow peak for the water year (October of previous calendar year to September of calendar year). The field is listed as “Y” if an annual (primary) peak event or “N” if a partial (secondary) peak event. If the event is not from the USGS annual and partial peak database, then “NA” is listed in the field.
