Canyonlands National Park - Green River - Island in the Sky District

The Green River flows from the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming before emptying into the Colorado River within Canyonlands National Park. Description A thick corridor of tamaraisk and willow lines the Green River, while a few bunchgrass and blackbrush shrubs cling to the White Rim standstone above the banks. Large stones on the sandstone ledges are river cobbles deposited during the Pleistoncene era.

Description Young cottonwood have taken hold along the banks stabilized by decades of tamarisk invasion and dam control of river flows. Blackbrush and biological soil crust occupy the soils atop the White Rim sandstone ledge above the river.
