Description Blackbrush dominate the slope below the Cove of Caves. Larger juniper shrubs cluster at the edges of sandstone, where they get access to extra rainwater runoff from the slickrock. Some juniper the foreground are showing signs of dieback from drought; the 1940s was a dry period in this region.

Description A new paved road cuts through the blackbrush slope below the Cove of Caves. The juniper at the bottom of the scene have survived the cut-and-fill of the nearby road, but appear to be stressed. Blackbrush shrubs are larger and more numerous than the 1950s, but the juniper away from the road have remain almost unchanged.
