Canyonlands National Park - Gray's Pature - Island in the Sky District

Gray's Pasture is a large flat meadow located in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park. Before the park's establishment in the 1960s, the whole area on top of the mesa was reffered to by local ranchers and cowboys as Gray's Pasture, and the area below it as Between the Rivers. Description The photo of the cabin at Gray's Pasture shows grasses in the area browsed to the base. Grasslands turn to spotty juniper woodland on the mesa in the background of the scene.

Description Just a few posts remain at Gray's Pasture. Native bunchgrasses grow large and thick, with few signs of invasive cheatgrass. Juniper on the far mesa show signs of dieback, perhaps due to a recent drought.

Description A lush grassland hosts a variety of native perennial grasses. The diversity and health of the grasses shows this area is not grazed. A few blackbrush thrive in the low drainages, and juniper and blackbrush on the far mesa show signs of recent dieback.
