Canyonlands National Park - Chesler Trail - Needles District

Chesler Trail leads from the Elephant Hill parking lot to Chesler Park within the Needles Distrcit of Canyonlands National Park. The trail alternates between bare slickrock patches and trails worn into the sandy red soil, leading visitors from grassy areas to shrubland to pinyon-juniper forested areas as they make their way further into the park. Description This photo shows a blocked social trail through healthy soil biocrust and a pinyon-juniper woodland. This informal trail has depressed the ground surface by several inches, and no biocrust can grown on this trampled area. Pinyon branches have been laid across the trail to allow the area to regenerate.

Description This social trail (unofficial trail) shows heavy use despite the branches laid across to discourage use. The trail is worn several inches below the surrounding soil surface, and the biocrust to the left of the trail shows sign of even more trampling than ten years previous. Yucca and other small plants show stress and mortality near the trail.
