Floodplain Ecosystem Service Mapper Released

The Floodplain Ecosystem Service Mapper is a web application that displays field site data and lidar-derived floodplain and stream channel geomorphic metrics in the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay watersheds.

Healthy floodplains and wetlands provide critical ecosystem services to local and downstream communities by retaining sediments, nutrients, and floodwaters. This project aims to assess, quantify, and value the ecosystem services provided by floodplains in the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River watersheds.

 
The Floodplain Ecosystem Service Mapper is a web application that displays datasets associated with this project as they are published online. The first release of the Floodplain Ecosystem Service Mapper displays the following datasets: 

  • Field site data for 68 sites in the Chesapeake and Delaware Floodplain Network, including site photos
  • Stream reach estimates of channel geometry derived using the Floodplain and Channel Evaluation Tool (FACET) and lidar-derived digital elevation models
  • The active (field verified 2-yr) floodplain extent derived from FACET

The Floodplain Ecosystem Service Mapper will be updated as new Floodplain Ecosystem Service datasets are published. The mapper is available at https://www2.usgs.gov/water/southatlantic/projects/floodplains/.
