GLSC Works with NY State DEC to Release and Study Cisco in Lake Erie

June 1, 2021

Tunison Lab works with NYDEC to release acoustically tagged cisco in Lake Erie.

The GLSC’s Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Sciences (Cortland, New York) and Lake Erie Biological Station (Sandusky, Ohio) worked with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to release 100 acoustically tagged cisco (Coregonus artedi) into Lake Erie on May 3, 2021. This included the release of 50 cisco in the East Basin near Dunkirk, New York, and 50 in the West Basin near Huron, Ohio. Surgically implanted transmitters will provide fish survivability and habitat-use information, which is critical for understanding the feasibility of cisco restoration for the once prevalent Lake Erie cisco. Data will be collected from annually serviced acoustic receivers within the extensive Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, a biotelemetry research collaborative throughout the Great Lakes region.
