Hoary bat
Watch out! Biologist Gabe Reyes dodges an incoming hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) in the field. (Public domain.)

WERC biologist Gabe Reyes and lead scientist Brian Halstead study the ecology of many bat species around Point Reyes National Seashore, CA. Those include the hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), pictured. Hoary bats seem to flock through Marin County every fall and spring, yet scientists are barely beginning to develop tools to untangle the mystery of where these hoary bats are coming from and where they’re headed.
