Intern Opportunities with the Nevada Water Science Center

We are looking for two students with different skillsets to fill two intern positions:

Position 1: Information Management Unit Student Trainee (Hydrology): We are interested in recruiting a student who will be in their final year of college or in a graduate studies program to gain practical experience in data visualization, programming, and GIS as related to hydrology and geography. This student will have some coursework or experience with Python and/or R programming and web development. This student will help us communicate hydrology to our stakeholders through interactive visual media.

Position 2: Northern Nevada Studies Unit Student Trainee (Hydrology): We are interested in recruiting a student who will be in their Junior or Senior year of college or early Graduate School during the Fall 2020 semester. This student will possess a high degree of motivation and will be majoring in a STEM related degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math). This student will have some coursework or experience using Microsoft office with particular experience using Excel and Word and possibly some experience with PowerPoint. This student may also possess skills with GIS and/or a coding language such as Python.

These two positions will be open to currently eligible students who meet all the requirements of the Internship Program.  Details about the Internship Program can be found below. This paid internship is located either at the USGS Nevada Water Science Center, located at 2730 North Deer Run Rd in Carson City, NV, or at the USGS NVWSC office located at 160 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson, NV. This position is a year-round internship and will allow students to work up to full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year to accommodate school schedule.  

About the Positions     

Work Schedule: Part-time during school year. Up to full-time during summer and breaks.

Benefits: Earned sick and annual leave. Paid holidays for holidays that occur during scheduled workdays. Eligible for health benefits.

The Internship Program

The Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and getting paid for the work performed. 

Eligibility:

• Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student. 
• Enrolled as at least a half-time student (or students who have been accepted for enrollment) in an accredited technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.
• Must have a satisfactory academic record, 2.0 or better cumulative grade point average.

In order to continue under the Pathways Internship Program, students must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of their appointment.
