Matthew Gyves selected as 2020 USGS Data Person of the Year
Matthew C. Gyves, a Hydrologic Technician in the Pennsylvania Water Science Center's Downingtown Office, received the 2020 "Data Person of the Year" award from the USGS Water Resources Mission Area.
The USGS Water Resources Mission Area provides water information that is fundamental to national and local economic well-being, protection of life and property, and effective management of the Nation’s water resources. The foundation of that information is high quality and timely measurements of the quantity and quality of water in streams, lakes, and aquifers. The USGS Water Resources Mission Area annually selects the "Data Person of the Year" based on nominations from Water and other Science Centers across the U.S.
Matthew C. Gyves is 2020 "Data Person of the Year", recognizing his contributions to advancing water resources data collection in Pennsylvania.
Matt was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the USGS Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS) water-quality sampling program in the Delaware River Basin. His understanding of the local sites, waterways, and available data were instrumental in developing an efficient framework for network expansion and data collection. Matt also provides leadership at the Independence Seaport Museum test site on the Delaware River at Philadelphia where he is now integrating a new USGS streamgage into the Museum’s interactive water-quality display. His current work also includes establishing an optical camera sediment station with the USGS National Volcano Observatory and surface velocity radar and lage-scale particle-image velocimetry (LSPIV) stations in the Delaware River Basin.
Matt is well known as a technical expert in surface-water monitoring, with a broad range of experience and knowledge. He is relied upon by technicians, hydrologists, supervisors, and specialists alike for his technical know-how, his engaged attitude, and for the solutions and ideas that he brings to all of his work.
