New USGS publication: Operational tracking of lava lake surface motion at Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai‘i

March 13, 2018

This study implements the first continuous, real-time operational routine for tracking lava lake surface motion, applying the technique to the persistent lava lake at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano.

Real-time tracking of lava lake surface motion at Halema‘uma‘u has been an important part of monitoring the lake's activity over the past several years. Previous studies of lake motion have been focused on short time intervals. This study implements the first continuous, real-time operational routine for tracking lava lake surface motion, applying the technique to the persistent lava lake at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano. The methodology and results of the study are described in this USGS publication (Techniques and Methods 13-A3).
