Streamflow and water level changed dramatically as Tropical Storm Henri made landfall in the northeastern U.S. in late August, 2021, as shown by the Water Footprint Data Visualization.

The animated map, from the USGS Water Resources Mission Area, shows the east coast of the United States from Maryland to Maine, with the Hurricane Henri path traveling from the Atlantic Ocean north to make land in Rhode Island as a Tropical Storm. As the storm proceeds, precipitation accumulates over New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New York, with the greatest precipitation in New Jersey. As the storm passes, water levels measured at USGS stream gages increases with several locations experiencing water levels above the flood stage. USGS provides rapid response to floods by deploying extra sensors to help protect life and property.
