Measuring Waves and Permafrost to Better Understand Erosion on Alaska’s Arctic Coast
Two groups of USGS scientists traveled to Barter Island in July and September of 2018, to install video cameras overlooking the island’s outer shore and to measure properties of the frozen soil, called permafrost, that strengthens the coastal bluffs.

Mapping the Stamp Sands of Lake Superior
The USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center conducted high-resolution geophysical mapping to determine the distribution and thickness of historical mine tailings (“stamp sands”) from copper mining, on the floor of Lake Superior.
