USGS HVO Press Release — Earthquake Felt Island-Wide and on Maui and O‘ahu
A moderate earthquake of magnitude-5.2 was recorded by the seismographic network at the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Sunday, July 17.
The earthquake occurred at 5:48 am (Hawai‘i time) and was centered about 49 km (30 miles) north-northeast of ‘O‘ōkala, or about 79 km (49 miles) north of Hilo at a depth of 8 km (5 miles). It was reported felt across much of the island of Hawai‘i as well as at several locations on Maui. No reports of damage have been received at this time. It was the largest earthquake in this general area since the magnitude-6.2 Honomū earthquake on April 26, 1973. The earthquake is also the largest recorded in Hawai‘i since the magnitude-5.6 Pāhala earthquake on April 16, 1999.
