USGS HVO Press Release — Lava Flows Issued from Tube System near Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō

April 3, 1997

Observations of the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō–Kupaianaha eruption relayed from helicopter tour pilots at 0800 hrs and 1030 hrs indicate that lava is flowing from two breakouts in the tube system near the 2300-ft. elevation, approximately 1 mile from the vent area.

As of 1030 hrs surface flows are confined to the recent flow field and have moved to within a mile of the top of Pulama Pali. A USGS field crew has been dispatched on foot and will provide additional updates late this afternoon.

Daily updates about ongoing eruptions, recent images and videos of summit and East Rift Zone volcanic activity, maps, and data about recent earthquakes in Hawaii are posted on the HVO website at https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo
