USGS Research Oceanographer Hosts Visiting Scholars to Collaborate on CFD Modeling of Sand and Oil Agglomerates

USGS oceanographer Soupy Dalyander hosts Master's researcher Melanie Schippers and her advisor from Deltares, Niels Jacobsen.

This article is part of the August-September 2016 issue of the Sound Waves newsletter.

USGS oceanographer Soupy Dalyander hosted Niels Jacobsen of Deltares (Netherlands) the week of September 11–17 at the USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center. Jacobsen is advising the Master's research of Melanie Schippers, who is also being hosted from August 14 to October 28. In collaboration with the USGS and Deltares, Schippers is developing a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the incipient motion behavior of sand and oil agglomerates (tar balls) which will be used to improve prediction of their behavior and fate following an oil spill.

For more information about sand and oil agglomerates, see journal article: “Assessing mobility and redistribution patterns of sand and oil agglomerates in the surf zone.”
