The competition is open to federal, tribal, military, state, regional, county, municipal, and all other government entities.

During the NAGC’s virtual award ceremony on May 20, 2020, the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center’s General Information Product 191 was awarded two 2020 National Association of Government Communicators Blue Pencil 1st place awards in the categories of Electronic Publication and Soft or Hard Cover Book.

The product was authored by Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) Information Specialist Sara Ernst and the technical edit, layout, and printing was conducted by the USGS Science Publishing Network’s Jonas Casey-Williams, Susan Meacham, and Cathy Knutson.

The team is honored to be recognized for their hard work and the success of the WHCMSC’s General Information Product (GIP).

The GIP is a short book intended to pique interest in and explain the center’s research focus areas, its unique and various capabilities, and the value of the research, data, and tools in informing decisions about the use, management, and protection of coastal and marine resources.

Sara Ernst states that, “The GIP was created to help spread awareness to the public, potential research partners, other organizations, and even other offices within USGS about what our center does. We wanted it to be accessible, concise yet informative, and visually appealing so it would be interesting and usable to a broad audience. All of the scientists and support staff at our center are incredibly dedicated to their work, it’s really beautiful to work with people so motivated and moved by a shared mission. I love getting to learn and write about what they’re each working on and as you’ll see in the GIP, the research they conduct is extremely valuable and diverse. We have scientists mapping the sea floor, creating advanced models to predict coastal change, studying underwater earthquakes, and so much more. I’m happy that we have created a product that has and will continue to effectively help people learn more about all the knowledge, data, and tools our center produces.”

The GIP is used at outreach events and meetings and is distributed at the center and by mail. It will be updated every three years to ensure it remains up-to-date and useable.
