Data

Basic hydrologic data collection, processing, analysis, dissemination, and archiving are major parts of the California Water Science Center program. Streamflow data, for example, are used for flood and water-supply forecasts, planning and design, river regulation, streamflow statistics, and research investigations. Much of the data are available on a near-real-time basis by satellite telemetry.

Nutrient Addition Experiment in the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel

Data were collected in the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel (West Sacramento, CA) in support of a whole-ecosystem experiment investigating whether phytoplankton production and biomass would respond to nitrate additions, which could potentially be exported to food-limited regions in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The experiment was conducted from July 2 to September 18, 2019. Publicati

Characterization of water residence time, nutrients, phytoplankton and related water quality constituents in the Cache Slough Complex of the California Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in 2017 and 2018

Data was collected in the Cache Slough Complex located in the northern San Francisco Estuary to characterize water quality parameters at high spatial resolution. Data collection was conducted on three separate occasions: October 2017, May 2018, and October 2018. Data set includes nitrate, ammonium, ortho-phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, c

Data sets for: Sampling for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) by the Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Priority Basin Project (GAMA-PBP)

The U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment-Priority Basin Project (USGS GAMA-PBP) collected samples to be analyzed for per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from domestic and public supply wells from May 2019 to September 2020. The datasets presented here include identification of the 28 PFAS constituents monitored by the project, Identification and brief characte

Historical Produced Water Chemistry Data Compiled for the North Coles Levee Oilfield, Kern County, California

This dataset contains geochemical and other information for 40 historical samples of produced water from the North Coles Levee Oil Field. Three of these samples are from commingled tanks containing produced water from multiple wells as noted in the Remarks column. Water that is produced as a byproduct of oil production is called produced water. The numerical water chemistry data were compiled by t

Estimated equivalent population using groundwater for public supply domestic use in the conterminous U.S. 2010, hydrogeologic mapping units, and wells used (ver. 2.0, March 2023)

These datasets map the estimated population using public supply drinking water (both groundwater and surface water) using two methods: the census enhanced method (CEM) evenly distributes the population across populated census blocks, and the urban land-use enhanced method (ULUEM) distributes the population only to certain urban land use designations. (See the six Estimated equivalent population us

Random forest regression model and prediction rasters of fluoride in groundwater in basin-fill aquifers of western United States

A random forest regression (RFR) model was developed to predict groundwater fluoride concentrations in four western United Stated principal aquifers - California Coastal basin-fill aquifers, Central Valley aquifer system, Basin and Range basin-fill aquifers, and the Rio Grande aquifer system. The selected basin-fill aquifers are a vital resource for drinking-water supplies. The RFR model was devel

Data for Machine Learning Predictions of Nitrate in Groundwater Used for Drinking Supply in the Conterminous United States

A three-dimensional extreme gradient boosting (XGB) machine learning model was developed to predict the distribution of nitrate in groundwater across the conterminous United States (CONUS). Nitrate was predicted at a 1-square-kilometer (km) resolution for two drinking water zones, each of variable depth, one for domestic supply and one for public supply. The model used measured nitrate concentrati

Stage-Storage and Bed Material Data from the 2020 Upper Letts Lake Survey, California

On October 13, 2020 a survey of Upper Letts Lake was conducted where both bathymetric and terrestrial lidar data were collected. Additionally, six bed material samples and three core samples were collected to understand the characterization of the grain-size of the lake bed. Survey data were merged with an additional lidar dataset from the USGS 3DEP program to create digital elevation model (DEM).

Geochemical, geological, and geophysical data for wells in the Poso Creek oil and gas field, Kern County, California

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity and characterizing aquifer systems in and around selected oil and gas fields in California. Data were collected for the Poso Creek oil field area which includes well construction data, production

Heatmap visualizations of arsenic, cadmium, and copper concentrations in streambed sediment in the Clark Fork River, Montana, 1996-2020

Long-term monitoring of stream-bed sediments reveals spatial and temporal trends in metal concentrations. Here we use concentration gradient "heat maps" as a visualization tool to report annual mean arsenic, cadmium and copper concentrations along a contamination gradient in the Clark Fork River (CFR) in Western Montana. The CFR has been heavily impacted by large-scale mining operations since the

Water use information for sites sampled by the California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program Priority Basin Project (GAMA-PBP), 2004-2021 (ver. 3.0, October 2023)

The U.S. Geological Survey collected water-quality samples from 3,199 sites between May 2004 and April 2022 for the California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program Priority Basin Project (GAMA-PBP). The GAMA-PBP is a cooperative project with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). The primary objectives of the GAMA-PBP are: (1) to assess the quality of groundwa

Santa Ana River Native Fish Population and Habitat Data, Santa Ana River, California, 2020

This dataset includes 2020 reach fish data and reach habitat data collected to support development of the upper Santa Ana River Habitat Conservation Plan for the Santa Ana Sucker (Catostomus santaanae) and the Arroyo Chub (Gila orcutti) in the Santa Ana River, California.
