Water Use in South Dakota

The U.S. Geological Survey collects and disseminates data on water use in South Dakota and the Nation through the National Water-Use Information Program. National water-use information, which includes water-use estimates for the State of South Dakota, has been published every five years since 1950. General water-use information and data used to compile national reports since 1985 are available from the National Water Use HomePage. Data are grouped by major water-use category such as irrigation or public-supply.

Estimated use of water in the United States in 2010

Water use in the United States in 2010 was estimated to be about 355 billion gallons per day (Bgal/d), which was 13 percent less than in 2005. The 2010 estimates put total withdrawals at the lowest level since before 1970.
