Decision science support for Chronic Wasting Disease Active
Eastern Ecological Science Center adds the decision analytical skill set to the existing body of USGS expertise on Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), in support of our sister DOI agencies.
Management of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is challenging because of trade-offs among important management objectives, uncertainty in the dynamics of the disease, some risks that are well understood and some that are not, jurisdictional overlap, disjunct authorities, and potentially different tradeoffs in individual decisions made by Federal, Tribal, State, and private management entities. USGS has expertise in many aspects of CWD, but what is missing at this time is the decision analytical support to knit all these areas of expertise together to aid decision makers. Eastern Ecological Science Center's first project to add the decision analytical skill set to the existing body of USGS expertise will involve working with federal agencies in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (including FWS, NPS, and USFS), both separately and together, to understand and frame the decisions over which federal agencies have jurisdiction relative to the arrival and management of CWD. The work will ultimately expand to include tribal and state agencies.
