If you find a bird band with one or more illegible numbers, mail it to the Bird Banding Laboratory to be cleaned with oxidative chemicals (etched). Even if the band is completely worn, we can typically retrieve the number(s). Regardless of the outcome, the band will be returned to you through the mail. We will also email you a Certificate of Appreciation with the banding details of the bird.
To send a band to the Bird Banding Laboratory, flatten the band and tape it between two pieces of cardboard or, if you want to keep it round, place it in a small box. Good packaging is important to make sure the band does not cut the envelope while shipping and get lost in the postal system. Please send along with the band your mailing address, email address and the information on how, when, and where you found the band.
