The ISS SERVIR Environmental Research and Visualization System (ISERV) is an automated system designed to acquire images of the Earth's surface from the International Space Station (ISS).
The ISS SERVIR Environmental Research and Visualization System (ISERV) was an automated system designed to acquire over 40,000 images of the Earth's surface from February 2013 to December 2014. SERVIR is a Spanish acronym meaning "to serve". The goal was to improve automatic image capturing and data transfer. The images taken will help environmental scientists, disaster responders and other Earth-based users.
ISERV's main component was the optical assembly which consisted of a 9.25 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, a focal reducer (field of view enlarger), a digital single lens reflex camera, and a high precision focusing mechanism. A motorized 2-axis pointing mount allowed pointing at targets approximately 23 degrees from nadir in both along- and across-track directions.
The ISERV captured 3 images per second that cover approximately a 19 km x 11 km area.
Digital Information
Images were geolocated using a custom built automated georeferencing process which provide an average accuracy of 2 km. ISERV color images are archived and distributed through EarthExplorer at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. Data are available for download in JPEG and GeoTIFF formats. Accompanying each JPEG is an XML auxiliary file, a JPEG World File (JGW) file that provides images locations and geometry information, and an OVR overview file containing the reduced resolution images pyramid for ease of use in image processing software.
The ISERV archive collection includes Level R (RAW) and Level 0 products. The Level 0 data have all communications artifacts such as synchronization frames, communications headers, and duplicate data removed. Images are georeferenced using the WGS 1984 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere.
